Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Lemosho

The Lemosho Route starts through green rainforest before climbing to the rim of a volcano, from which you’ll glimpse the peak for the first time. It will suit those seeking a slower climb on a route with fewer other climbers in stunning surroundings. The additional time taken on Kilimanjaro on this nine night route ensures a very high success rate.

We ensure you are looked after by a large team while climbing Kilimanjaro, including a chief guide, an assistant guide, a cook and numerous porters. You camp throughout your climb using equipment at a level to suit you.

Day 1 – Forest

You will be driven this morning to the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park where you begin your climb. Your route begins through the forest at the foot of the mountain to the camp which is pitched at around 2,750m

Day 2 – Shira

The route today climbs up the edge of Kilimanjaro’s Shira volcano and the vegetation thins as you climb and high altitude plants take over.

Today’s camp is near the rim of an ancient volcano and gives you the chance to see Kilimanjaro’s peak for the first time. The camp is pitched at about 3,500m.

Day 3 – Shira

Your trek today crosses the Shira Plateau which is the flat caldera of an ancient volcano which would have been bigger than Kilimanjaro. In good weather conditions there are great views of Kibo and the glaciers on this section , although thick mist often covers the plateau interrupting the views.

You will reach camp by lunchtime today and will have enough time to relax and also take a short acclimatisation walk.

Day 4 – Lava Tower

You will have a three to five hour climb today, leaving Kilimanjaro’s heath zone and heading into the alpine desert, which is fairly inhospitable with little vegetation, freezing nights and blazing during the day. The Lava Tower camp is at about 4,600m, and those feeling like it can climb the Lava Tower in the afternoon.

Day 5 – Karanga Valley

Your day starts with a descent into the Barranco Valley before climbing the Barranco wall. You then head into the Karanga Valley to the camp where you have the chance to relax or take a short hike to enjoy the spectacular views of the glaciers.

Day 6 – Barafu

You will have approximately a four hour hike today before the final steep and slow section to the Barafu Hut where you’ll find great views of the Mawenzi Peak.

In the afternoon you will head higher, to perhaps 1,800m on an acclimatisation hike, before descending to the camp once more.

Day 7 – Crater

Your climbing day starts early with a climb up to the rim of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo crater. As oxygen levels are low everything is taken slowly and the ascent to the rim and descent back to camp will take until lunchtime.

The afternoon is your own to relax and acclimatise before dinner and an early bedtime.

Day 8 – Summit

An early start should get you up the last section to Uhuru peak to arrive at the top of Kilimanjaro as the sun rises. Once photos are taken you descend across scree slops past Bafaru camp to Millenium camp for lunch. The pace slows after lunch and you continue down to Mweka camp for your last night on Kilimanjaro.

Day 9 – Arusha

Your final descent is through the mountain’s lower heath section and rainforest before you find yourself at the gate to the national park. From here you will be transferred by vehicle to the Arusha Hotel where you can decide the nature of your own Kilimanjaro climb celebration – splash in the pool, long hot shower, drinks at the bar or all three!
